You and the other parent may set up your own child support agreement. It is a good idea to put your agreement in writing and sign it. If you do this, there is less risk of a misunderstanding. It is also easier to enforce a written and signed agreement.

Physical abuse is when someone assaults you, handles you roughly, or slaps, pushes, or beats you. It is also physical abuse when someone refuses to give you medicine that you should take, or gives you medicine that you should not be taking.

Canada’s history has been shaped by countless determined women who worked to promote and uphold gender equality in Canada. Women championed a number of important human rights that have become core Canadian values — the right to vote in provincial and federal elections, the right to own property, the right to earn a fair wage, and finally, the right to be recognized as “persons” under the law.

Since my early days at Ogilvy Renault and nearly thirty years of experience as a lawyer, the field of law has changed considerably. When I started articling, the firm’s lawyers did not have computers and relied entirely upon the secretarial staff. Nowadays, thanks to technological advances and the internet, I have information at my fingertips and software that streamlines all processes, reducing labor and saving both my and my client’s time.

As parents, you are both responsible for the support of your children and for ensuring that their best interests come first. Even if you separate or divorce, that responsibility continues. It is important for your children that they not be put in the middle of any conflict you may have with each other and that you continue to protect them from hardship.

Most people think of violence and harassment as a physical assault. However, workplace violence and harassment is a much broader problem. It is any act in which a person is abused, threatened, intimidated or assaulted in their employment. Rumours, swearing, verbal abuse, pranks, arguments, property damage, vandalism, sabotage, pushing, theft, physical assaults, psychological trauma, anger-related incidents, rape, arson and murder are all examples of workplace violence.

The Human Rights System

Ontario’s human rights system consists of three separate and independent parts:

           1. The Ontario Human Rights Commission (the “OHRC”) works on the roots of discrimination in order to effect systemic change. It develops policies and provides targeted public education, monitors human rights, does research and analysis, and conducts human rights inquiries. In matters affecting the broad public interest, it may take its own cases to the Tribunal or intervene in human rights cases before the Tribunal.
